Hi, I’m Dr. Phil Doleac from Magic Smiles Orthodontics. Lately I’ve noticed an increasing number of ads both on television and in print media extolling quick smiles in a very short period of time, sometimes without ever seeing the doctor. I’d like to provide a little perspective. I find it quite amazing when I reflect back on the profession of orthodontics for the last 20 years. When I began my career orthodontics was all about headgear, extractions, and braces. With current technology, most of it developed by NASA and the space program, I am able to treat virtually without taking out teeth while developing a broad natural smile that is stunningly beautiful.
One of the newer developments in orthodontics is the Invisalign treatment system. With Invisalign, I can provide patients with a much more positive experience. As some of you may know, one of my sons played in the NBA for 10 years. So as you might expect, I’m a big basketball fan. So bear with me while I make an analogy to basketball. I’ve got two basketballs here, one is an official NBA basketball, the other says NBA, but it is designed for a kids game. There is a vast difference in quality between the two balls. The same is true of aligners.
There is a wide range in the difference between the quality and effectiveness of aligners made by different companies. Invisalign has been in the clear aligner market for 20 years and has invested millions of dollars into research and development, providing patients and orthodontists with aligners that move teeth effectively and safely.
Carrying the basketball analogy just a little further, no matter how good the ball is, it is just a tool. The effectiveness of that tool depends on whose hands are wielding it. A basketball in my hands, even though I played a little college ball, nowadays it is not very effective at all. In my son’s hands, it gets a lot more effective. If I put the ball in LeBron James’ hand, or Larry Byrd or Michael Jordan, there is no telling what they can do with it. The same is true of aligners. They are just tools. In the hands of someone without experience, they’re not capable of very much. In the hands of an experienced orthodontist, however, the results can be exceptional.
